Gifts for Nature Lovers: Wooden Woodland Animals

For someone who loves nature, the best gift names one specific animal rather than 'nature' in general. Hand-carved, hand-painted wooden woodland animals, such as a fox couple sharing one scarf, a two-tone hedgehog or a small bear, bring the countryside they walk in indoors. Choose the creature they always stop to watch, and on selected pieces add a laser-engraved name, to turn a pleasant ornament into a personal keepsake.

What makes a good gift for a nature lover?

People who love the outdoors are awkward to buy for, because they already own the equipment. The walker has boots, the gardener has a shed full of tools, the bird watcher has binoculars older than you are. Buying more kit rarely lands; what lands is a gift that shows you have noticed which part of nature they actually love.

That is the useful clue. Nearly everyone who talks about nature has one animal they always mention: the fox that crosses the lane at dusk, the hedgehog they feed in autumn, the robin that follows the spade. A present shaped like that specific animal says you listened, and it works just as well for the person whose house is full of woodland-inspired things as for the one who spends every weekend in wellies.

Wood suits the subject. A hand-carved, hand-painted figure has grain, warmth and small irregularities that plastic nature-themed goods do not, and it is made to live indoors, on a shelf or windowsill, where it is seen every day rather than stored between walks.

Winter is when this sort of gift works hardest. Between the clocks going back and Christmas, people are indoors looking at their shelves rather than out on the paths, and a woodland figure earns its place then: a fox on the windowsill while the rain comes down, a hedgehog beside the kettle. Wrapped with a card that names the animal, it also answers the December problem of what to give the person who insists they need nothing.

Which woodland animals make the best gifts?

Foxes are the most requested woodland animal, and the collection has several quite different ones. The Fox Couple with Knit Scarf is a pair of hand-painted foxes, 8.5 × 5 × 10 cm, sharing one real knitted scarf, which makes it a natural gift for a couple or a close pair of friends. The Fox in a Vintage Suit is a taller character piece at around 17 cm, for anyone whose taste runs to storybooks and the slightly eccentric. The Faceted Fox Miniature is a small, low-poly fox about 4.5 cm tall that suits a desk, a windowsill or a crowded shelf.

For something quieter, the Black Bear Figurine is a hand-carved bear, 6 cm tall, left in dark tones for a rustic shelf, and the Walnut and Beech Hedgehog is a two-tone hedgehog with a beech face and walnut spines, about 5 cm long and pleasingly weighty at roughly 45 g.

A quick guide:

• For a couple: Fox Couple with Knit Scarf
• For a character piece: Fox in a Vintage Suit
• For a small space: Faceted Fox Miniature or Walnut and Beech Hedgehog
• For a rustic shelf: Black Bear Figurine

Can you personalise a woodland-themed gift?

Two pieces take engraving. The Natural Wood Fox, a curled-up fox left unpainted so the grain shows, and the Walnut and Beech Hedgehog can each be laser-engraved with a name, a date or a short message, which turns a woodland ornament into a keepsake for a birthday, a new home or a first Christmas in the countryside. See our personalised gifts page for everything that can carry engraving.

Keep the wording short, because a small base holds a name and a date better than a sentence. Check the spelling carefully before ordering: engraving cannot be corrected afterwards.

The painted foxes and the bear are sold as they are. If you had your heart set on a name, choose the natural fox or the hedgehog; if the animal itself matters more than the words, any of them will do the job.

How should wooden woodland animals be displayed?

These are pieces for indoors. A windowsill with a view of the garden, a bookshelf, a mantelpiece or a desk are all natural homes, and woodland animals look best in small groups: a fox and a hedgehog with a plant between them read as a little winter scene. If the person loves birds as well, our guide to gifts for bird lovers suggests pieces that sit happily in the same display.

A little care keeps the colours true. Dust with a soft dry brush, lift the piece by its body rather than its ears or tail, and keep it away from radiators, damp bathrooms and long hours of strong direct sunlight, which fades paint over time. Our guide to caring for hand-painted wooden figurines covers stubborn marks and longer-term care.

Are wooden animals a good gift for children who love nature?

They can be, with a caveat. These are decorative items, not toys: they are hand-painted display pieces without safety testing as playthings, so keep them out of reach of young children and pets. A teenager or an older child who loves wildlife and will handle a figure gently, holding it by the body, can absolutely enjoy one, and the small foxes suit a study shelf.

For younger children, treat the piece as the family's ornament rather than the child's toy, and let them spot it on the windowsill instead. If your gift is for a household you do not know well, a slightly larger, sturdier-feeling piece such as the Fox in a Vintage Suit is the safer choice than a tiny miniature.
