Personalized Pet Memorial Gifts: What to Choose and What to Engrave

A personalized pet memorial gift works best when it looks like the pet and carries a short, accurate line of text. Pick the breed and coat color first, then the size, then decide what the engraving should say: a name, a name and years, or a few words. A hand-carved, hand-painted wooden cat, dog or bird on an engravable base is a decorative keepsake, not an urn.

How do you choose a personalized pet memorial gift?

There are five decisions to make, and the order matters. Start with the animal: breed, coat color and, if you can, the way the pet sat or stood. Then choose a size that fits the place the keepsake will live. Next decide whether to engrave, and what to say. Finally, decide how and when to give it, with a card that names the pet.

It helps to think of the gift as a small portrait rather than a product. The person receiving it is not looking for something clever. They are looking for a quiet sign that the pet is remembered, and a keepsake that resembles the animal does that more than any phrase on the base.

Our pieces are hand-carved and hand-painted decorative figures. They are not urns or caskets, and we do not describe them as holding ashes. They are made to sit on a shelf, a desk or a windowsill.

Which animal and style should you pick?

For cats, color is usually the deciding factor. The Personalized Calico Cat and the Personalized Silver Tabby are each about 5.5 cm (a little over 2 inches) tall, the Engraved Brown Tabby Cat and the Engraved Siamese Cat stand 9.5 cm tall on a square base, and the Smiling Ginger Cat and Black Bombay Cat each have an engravable base.

For dogs, the Border Collie on Paw Base is carved in a low-poly style on a paw-print base, the Dog with Bandana comes in three coat colors, and the Chubby Pug Figurine, the Personalized Shiba Inu and the Personalized Westie Dog Figurine cover popular breeds.

Bird lovers can look at the Personalized Cockatiel, which sits on an engraved base.

What size works best?

Think about where the keepsake will go. Our figures are small, from a palm-sized piece of about 4 cm to about 9.5 cm tall with the base, so they suit a bookshelf, a desk, a nightstand or a windowsill rather than a mantel centerpiece. Each product page lists the size in centimeters, so check it against the space.

A smaller piece can feel more private and is easy to place beside a photograph. A taller piece with a base has more room for lettering and stands out on a shelf. If you are choosing for someone who has limited space, a smaller figure is often the kinder choice.

If the person has more than one pet, consider two small figures side by side. They look like a set, and each can carry its own name.

What should the engraving say?

Keep it short. A base can only carry a little text, and shorter wording is easier to read and less likely to contain an error. Here are some examples of what people choose, using only a name, a date or a short message.

  • The pet's name only, such as Bella
  • A name and a year, such as Max 2026
  • A name and the years of a life, such as Bella 2012 to 2026
  • Two names, such as Max and Bella
  • A short message, such as Always with us
  • A short message, such as Forever loved
  • A name with a short line, such as Bella, our sunshine
  • An owner's note, such as With love, Mom and Dad

How do you avoid mistakes in the lettering?

Engraving cannot be corrected once it is done, so treat the wording like a legal document. Write it out in full, capital letters included, and check the spelling of the name against something written, such as a vet record or a collar tag. Many pets have a registered name and an everyday one, so use the one the family actually said.

Have a second person read it back before you order, and check punctuation, such as apostrophes and dashes. If you are unsure whether to include a date, leave it out. A name alone is never wrong.

If a piece is not marked as personalized, it is sold as it is, and you can put the pet's name on the card instead.

How do you give the gift, and what do you say?

Give it simply: in person or in the mail, with a handwritten card that uses the pet's name. One specific memory, such as how the dog waited at the door or how the cat chose the same chair every morning, tells the person that the animal mattered to others too.

Avoid lines that try to fix the grief, such as suggesting another pet or saying it was for the best. Let the gift and the card say that you are thinking of them. There is no single right time. Some people welcome a keepsake in the first week, while others find it easier a few weeks later, once the cards have stopped arriving.

Anniversaries, birthdays and holidays are also good moments for a small keepsake, because the pet is often on the owner's mind then.

Frequently asked questions

What can be engraved on a pet memorial figure?

A name, a date or a short message can be laser-engraved on the base of the personalized pieces. A base only carries a little text, so keep it short. Write the wording out in full and check the spelling before you order, because engraving cannot be corrected.

Is a wooden pet memorial figure an urn?

No. These are hand-carved, hand-painted decorative keepsake figures, not urns or caskets, and we do not describe them as holding ashes. They are made to sit on a shelf, desk or windowsill as a reminder of the pet.

How do I choose between a cat, dog or bird figure?

Choose the animal the person lost, then match the breed and coat color as closely as you can. If the match is not exact, a figure with the right color and attitude usually feels right to the owner. A name on the base does the rest.

Can I buy these in the US or Canada?

Single pieces are sold on our Etsy shop, which supports delivery to the US and Canada. The checkout shows what is available to your address and when. We cannot promise a delivery date, so check the listing and order early if you want engraving.

What if the piece is not marked as personalized?

Then it is sold without engraving, and only pieces marked as personalized have a base that can carry a name or a date. You can still make it personal by writing the pet's name on the card, or by adding a small photograph beside it.
