What 325 Etsy reviews say about hand-carved wooden animal gifts
We analysed the 325 most recent Etsy reviews across 119 of our hand-carved, hand-painted wooden animal designs, collected on 2026-10-06. The average rating is 4.94 out of 5, and 313 of the 325 reviews — 96.3 per cent — are five stars.
Buyers mention gift-giving in 15.1 per cent of the reviews, praise how the piece looks or is made most often, and not one review says the piece was smaller than expected — three say it was bigger. The two one-star reviews, both about despatch and returns rather than the carving, are counted and discussed below like all the rest.

Reviews per category, the number of designs in that category that have at least one review, the average star rating, and the category's share of all 325 reviews. A review belongs to the category of the design it was left on.
The dataset. The sample is the most recent reviews shown on Etsy for each of the 119 designs that have at least one review, up to six per design, collected on 2026-10-06. Review dates run from 2025-12-07 to 2026-10-05. Keyword counts treat each review once per theme: the gift-occasion words counted are gift, birthday, Christmas, memorial, loss, anniversary, Mother's Day, mum, Father's Day, dad, Valentine's and new baby. At shop level the Etsy shop holds a 4.9 star rating from 720 reviews across more than 3,400 orders.
Ratings: 96.3 per cent five stars, and the two 1-star reviews in full. Of the 325 reviews, 313 are five stars, 10 are four stars and 2 are one star; there are no two- or three-star reviews. Both one-star reviews concern despatch and returns rather than the carving: one buyer wrote "a month delayed" in March 2026, and one asked in September 2026 to return the items. They are included here as they stand. If you are ordering for a fixed date such as Christmas, order early rather than at the last minute.
Categories: cats draw the most reviews, dogs and miniatures keep a perfect average. Cat designs collected 91 reviews, 28.0 per cent of the total, across 30 designs — see, for example, the Faceted Ginger Tabby Cat. Birds follow with 44 and dogs with 38. Dogs and miniatures are the only categories averaging a full 5.00; the farm average of 4.80 comes from a single one-star review, with 19 of its 20 reviews at five stars. Seasonal designs have only 2 reviews in the window, one five and one one star, which is too few to read anything into.
What buyers praise: the look first, the making second, the packaging third. Appearance words — cute, adorable, lovely, beautiful — appear in 165 reviews, 50.8 per cent. Craftsmanship words — carved, well made, quality — appear in 79, 24.3 per cent. Packaging comes third at 42 reviews, 12.9 per cent, which matters to a shop that plans to resell: pieces arrive boxed well enough to be given as gifts. Some form of "matches the photos or description" appears in 31 reviews, and 10 reviews mention engraving or personalisation.
Gift occasions: one review in seven mentions gifting, named occasions are few. 49 reviews, 15.1 per cent, mention gift-giving in general — "It was a perfect gift" is a typical line. Named occasions are rarer: five reviews mention Mother's Day or mum, two mention Christmas, two mention a birthday and one mentions Father's Day or dad. Three reviews, 0.9 per cent, mention a memorial or a loss, such as "Really beautiful memorial for our cat that passed" — a smaller share of the visible review text than our pet memorial keepsake ranges might suggest. No review in this window mentions an anniversary, Valentine's or a new baby.
Expectation gap: nothing was smaller than expected. Not one of the 325 reviews says the piece was smaller than expected; three say the opposite — "It was actually bigger than I imagined which made it even better". That is probably because every product page lists exact dimensions, for example 7.6 × 3.8 × 3.8 cm for the Bear with Heart Balloon, so size surprises are rare in either direction.
Monthly pattern and the limits of this sample. The reviews cluster in recent months: September 2026 is the busiest with 83, against 8 in December 2025. Because the sample holds each design's most recent reviews, earlier months are under-represented by construction, so read the shape of that curve as directional, not as a sales history. Other limits: this is one retail channel, mostly English-language reviews, and the 325 reviews here are part of the 720 on the shop as a whole. For the designs with the highest review counts, see our most-reviewed designs; for stocking decisions, the wholesale page has UK trade terms and a trade enquiry form, and our guide to stocking wooden animal figurines in a gift shop covers the practicalities.
Questions
Where does the data on this page come from?
From the reviews displayed on the Etsy listings of the Jodie's Wood Studio shop. We collected the most recent reviews for each of the 119 designs that have at least one, up to six per design, on 2026-10-06 — 325 reviews in total, dated between 2025-12-07 and 2026-10-05. Every number on this page can be re-run from the same counting rules.
How many of the reviews were negative?
Two of the 325 — both one star, 0.6 per cent. Neither criticises the carving: one buyer reported a despatch delay of about a month in March 2026, and one asked to return the items in September 2026. The remaining 323 reviews are four or five stars, giving an average of 4.94 out of 5 across the sample.
Do buyers buy these wooden animals as gifts?
Often. 49 of the 325 reviews — 15.1 per cent — mention gift-giving, making it the most common occasion after generic praise. Named occasions are much rarer: Mother's Day or mum comes up five times, Christmas and birthday twice each, Father's Day once, and memorial or loss three times. Most gift buyers simply call the piece a gift without naming the occasion.
Were any pieces smaller than expected?
No. None of the 325 reviews says a piece was smaller than expected, and three say theirs was bigger than expected. Every product page lists exact dimensions in centimetres, which is the likeliest reason size surprises are rare. Buyers who want to judge scale before ordering can compare the stated size against a familiar object at home.
How can a retailer use these findings?
As one signal among several. Cats draw the most reviews and dogs and miniatures hold a perfect average, so those ranges are a natural first order, but newer designs have had less time to collect reviews and your own customers may differ. Review counts measure retail sentiment, not wholesale demand — pair this page with our most-reviewed designs table and your own sales before fixing a range.
